How to Avoid a Bad Haircut
We’ve all been there.
Suddenly your haircut appointment is over and you’re staring in the mirror, frustrated and upset because your haircut turned out completely different than you wanted. Maybe it’s too short, the wrong layers, or just the wrong haircut for you in general, and you’re wondering what you can say to your hairstylist without hurting his or her feelings.
To avoid this exact scenario, we’ve put together a list of tips below to ensure you get the haircut you want every time you walk into a salon.
Tip #1
Don’t make any rash decisions. What we mean is, know the haircut or hairstyle you want before you even make your appointment. Don’t decide what you want to do with your hair when you get to the salon, as this can cause “haircut remorse” at the end of your appointment. If you want to drastically change your hair, make sure you fully understand what you’re doing to your hair ahead of your appointment, and realize how long it’s going to take to grow your hair out again. This leads us to our next tip…
Tip #2
Bring pictures with you! It’s a lot easier for a hairstylist to know what you want when they can see it visually. Trying to explain the haircut that you saw in a magazine three weeks ago can be confusing for both of you, and can end up causing a disaster at the end of the haircut. Try to bring as many pictures with you as you can, so your hairstylist can fully understand the look you’re going for.
Tip #3
Be honest with your hairstylist. They don’t know how you style your hair everyday, so they’re looking to you to tell them what you’re going to be doing with your hair. It’s important to tell them this in the beginning of the appointment, so they can tell you if the haircut or hairstyle you want is going to work for you. For instance, if the cut you want requires 15-30 minutes of styling every morning, but you only spend 5 minutes on your hair in the morning, chances are your hairstylist will suggest a different cut for you. Remember, they know a lot about hair, and want you to leave feeling your best, so give them any helpful details you can!
Tip #4
Speak up. If you think your haircut isn’t turning into what you imagined, tell your hairstylist before it’s too late. Stylists know how to fix a bad haircut, so they’re going to be able to help you out, especially in the beginning of the haircut. Pay attention to what your stylist is doing and ask questions. Now is not the time to be shy, and your hairstylist would rather hear from you now then at the end of the appointment, when it’s already too late.
Tip #5
We think this goes without saying, but a DIY haircut won’t bode well for you or your hairstylist. It may seem like a good idea at the time, but once you cut your hair and realize you still need to see a hairstylist, you’re going to be upset. It’s also going to be hard for them to work with what you did, and you might have to go with a completely different hairstyle just to fix your hair. The bottom line, let the professionals do the cutting, and keep your scissors away from your hair.
While these are all great tips for preventing a bad haircut, it’s also important to know how to fix a bad hair day, because unfortunately, those are going to happen to the best of us.
